This is a tough email to write. Not because anything bad has happened to me or my family or the farm; our contact with the fires of the past months has been on the periphery at worst. We had a few worrying nights where we watched the maps and called neighbours, but it is nothing compared to the thousands that have suffered and battled this summer. My struggle is minor, I have to strike the appropriate balance between positive marketing and sympathy for our more distant neighbours who were so badly affected.
Gerringong and Kiama and the hinterland were spared from any flames. We, like most of the east coast, had ashes rain down on us and the smell of smoke comes and goes. The last rains have turned the grasses a much lusher green - typical of this area, but the soil is not yet soaked through and we could use more rain and like most farmers in Australia right now, our local dairy industry wants more
But, there are literal storm clouds brewing and this crisis will pass and in the short and medium terms we can expect that Ocean Farm will be a wonderful place to escape.
Whatever your motivations - to escape, celebrate, holiday or commemorate or to support some of the businesses and suppliers down here that have lost their busy season (cafes, florists, cleaners, bakeries etc etc.) If we can be a gateway for you to support other South Coast businesses we should be very happy and we look forward to welcoming you down for 2020.
